Rules about installing meters

The site owner will need your agreement to install a meter on your pitch. They cannot force you to have a smart meter or water meter. They also cannot enter your pitch without your agreement.

You can ask your site owner or reseller to fit a water meter or smart electricity or gas meter on your pitch but there is no legal requirement on them to do so.

If you want to install a meter, you may need the site owner’s permission before you can make alterations on your pitch. Check your pitch agreement and site rules. If the site owner’s agreement is required, it should be set out in the express terms of your agreement or the site rules.

Can you be charged for installing a meter?

If the site owner regards the installation of meters on your pitch as an improvement to the site and they want to pass on the costs to residents through the pitch fee, they must consult residents and any qualifying residents’ association.

Can you be charged for meter reading?

A site owner is only entitled to recover from a resident the unit cost of gas and electricity that they pay to the utility provider plus a standing charge.

All administration costs will be included in the pitch fee unless it is included in the express terms of a resident’s agreement.
